CentroHealth research Center of Manhiça in Mozaambique
Main local partner: Fundação Manhiça (FM), managing body of the Health Research Center of Manhiça (CISM) whose mission is to promote and conduct biomedical research in priority health areas to promote and protect the health of the most vulnerable populations.
History research activities:
Fundació Clínic per a la Recerca Biomèdica counts with a presence of 20 years in Mozambique.
Together with the Barcelona Institute for Global Health, the FCRB has in the country a scientific research program focused on diseases with the highest burden of morbidity and mortality.
Since 1996, following the creation of the Centro de Investigación en Salud de Manhiça (CISM) through a bilateral cooperation agreement between the Government of Spain and the Republic of Mozambique, the research group of FCRB, led by Dr. . Pedro Alonso, was conducting epidemiological and clinical studies on prevalent diseases in Mozambique, mainly malaria, but also acute respiratory infections, diarrhea, tuberculosis, HIV / AIDS and other neglected diseases.
Since then, the group of researchers has gained advanced knowledge on the prevalence of different diseases, as well as diagnosis, treatment and prevention.
In 2008, the Manhiça Foundation was created with the aim of developing the institutional capacities of the Health Research Center of Manhiça and the Foundation is now in charge of the scientific and administrative management of CISM.
Since 2007 the Spanish Agency for International Cooperation and Development (AECID) has co-funded the Health Research Center of Manhiça with a financial contribution of € 9,612,489 allowing the achievement of excellent results.
