What we do * International health

International Health

The “Fundació Clínic per a la Recerca Biomèdica (FCRB)” has over 25 years of experience managing research and international cooperation projects in the health sector, in collaboration with International and Spanish donors (AECID, ACCD, Fundació La Caixa) and (European Commission, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation) in Mozambique, Morocco and Bolivia.

The International Health is an area of excellence of the Hospital Clínic and also is a reference at a national and international level. The model is based on the integration of a powerful research group with academic institutions of first level such as the Hospital Clinic, University of Barcelona and ISGlobal, which develop networks and has presence in middle and low-income countries (Mozambique , Morocco, Bolivia).

The Centre for International Health articulates its activities mainly on two platforms, Bolivia and Mozambique, and on the research and translation activities developed in Morocco.

Chagas Platform in Bolivia

The goal of the Chagas Initiative is to promote the access to diagnosis and treatment of patients with Chagas, both in endemic and non-endemic countries, and contribute to the global efforts to control the disease. A key aspect of the work of the Initiative is the translation of the knowledge generated by the research to society. Both in Spain and in Bolivia, the Initiative develops research projects and advocacy, provides medical care to patients infected with Chagas and provides training for health professionals in the diagnosis and treatment of the disease.

Research Platform in Mozambique

One of the most emblematic projects of FCRB, developed with the support of Spanish Cooperation, is the Centro de Investigación en Salud de Manhiça (CISM) which already counts with 20 years of activities. Framed within the historical relationship of cooperation between Spain and Mozambique, the center was born from the consensus between the people who in 1995 were in charge in ministerial positions of both countries, the vision of researchers from the Hospital Clínic of Barcelona and the National Institute of Health and finally the Eduardo Mondlane University of Maputo. Through collaboration with the CISM there have been developments, and are still developing research projects related to malaria, acute respiratory infections, diarrhea, tuberculosis, HIV / AIDS and other neglected diseases. The CISM is one of the leading African centers of health research, with high international recognition.

Research and Cooperation
Projects in Morocco

In 2009, in coordination with the Ministry of Health of Morocco and the University Hospital Centre Ibn Sina (CHIS) of Rabat, the FCRB supported the launch of the first biomedical research laboratory of the hospital system. The joint research platform was a pioneering initiative in the country, and has provided solid data for analysis and decision making in health such as the introduction of new vaccines for meningitis and cancer of the cervix. Following its stable presence in the country, the FCRB has developed training projects for maternal and child care in the province of Tetuan, strengthening primary care neonatal centers. With the aim of improving knowledge, analysis and research of the trends and challenges of global health in the Mediterranean region; and with the aim to guide regional public policies on common challenges, to improve the health access and a better quality of citizens life, the FCRB is developing an Health Observatory for the Mediterranean region based in Morocco.
